Last night, Becky, Josh and Danielle and myself went over to see the David Crowder Band in San Jose. Dave and the band has led worship at Graceland two times (Graceland was the alternative worship gathering I was pastor of) and he also wrote the foreword in the Emerging Worship book I wrote. The DCB was opening up for Third Day. (It's kind of funny, as I had no idea what Third Day even sounded like or what songs they sing. I am pretty removed from the Christian pop music world). After the DCB played we hung out with Dave in his tour bus for the whole Third Day set.
It was refreshing talking to Dave as we first met around 9 years ago I think. But what I enjoyed was talking about church, catching up on what is happening at University Baptist in Waco, and also some talk about theology. When we were driving home Becky was saying how she never heard someone talk so artistically using word pictures about theology. So not only is Dave a good songwriter, but a very good thinker. I think songwriters really are the prophets and voices today in so many ways, and do shape people's thinking about faith and God. So I am glad he is doing what he is doing.
I also appreciate that he is someone who actually spends more detailed time on his hair then I do. We once talked about 30 minutes about the process of how he gets his hair like he does. I think it is really his hair is what is really behind him being such a good songwriter.
