In revisiting one of the books where I originally read the information about the controversial organ and the blog post I wrote about it - I found further controversies with musical styles in church history.
Charles Finney in 1835 wrote that there were still in his day "many churches who would not tolerate an organ. They would not be half so much excited to be told that sinners are going to hell as to be told that there is going to be an organ in the meeting house."
He also wrote about Christians who protested the usage of a choir in a worship gathering. "It was thought best to have a select choir of singers sit by themselves, so as to give opportunity to improve the music. But this was bitterly opposed."
I also read how some in the early church rejected instruments all together. Calvin for a while eliminated all music from worship but then brought it back in as it was felt the gatherings became "sterile". Zwingli destroyed the organ in Zurich's cathedral because the organ was also used for "non-gospel entertainment."
